Minimally invasive surgery is a relative term to describe smaller incisions and less dissection used to perform the same surgical procedures as those done in the past. It is used in total joint replacement, fracture care, arthroscopy, and hand surgery. Incisions for total hip replacement have been reduced to only 4 inches when only a few years ago they were 12 inches. Hip fractures can be repaired through a 1¼ inch incision without muscle cutting as apposed to 8 inches with muscle cutting. Most shoulder surgery can now be done entirely though the arthroscope instead of opening the shoulder for complex repairs. Carpal tunnel surgery is done through a 17 millimeter incision under local anesthesia and takes only 5 minutes. Ulnar nerve surgery is done through a 2 centimeter incision instead of one that is usually 6-8 inches.
